A British woman in her 20s has revealed what she experienced after losing more than about 76kg.

According to the overseas news outlet Need to Know on the 1st, local time, Christie, 28 years old, gained weight up to 181kg while working night shifts and ordering delivery food every day. She was so inactive that she would not even walk the approximately 10-minute distance to the bus stop. When flying, she had to use a seatbelt extender.

Christie decided to go on a diet after a doctor warned her that she might not live to the age of 40. She initially lost about 12.7kg on a keto diet, then moved away from the overly restrictive diet, ate balanced meals, and increased the amount of time she spent walking. By cooking meals made with healthy ingredients with her family and developing the habit of walking in her daily life, she eventually lost about 63.5kg naturally.

After Christie reached a weight-loss plateau, she used anti-obesity medication. She said, “At one point, I hit a plateau,” adding, “I needed something to help me, so I used medication.” She continued, “As my weight went down, the way people around me treated me changed,” and said, “I feel like I receive more respect from people.”

However, she said that her perception of her body did not completely change even after losing weight. She still thinks of herself as being her former size and sometimes picks up large clothes, saying, “When I look in the mirror, I still see my former self.” She was left with loose skin from the weight loss, and although her body shape has changed significantly, she said she would not put off enjoying life until she had a “perfect body.” She currently focuses on walking whenever possible, enjoying swimming, and eating simple, balanced meals.

Maintaining healthy eating habits is important even after successfully losing weight. The keto diet Christie followed is a way of eating that reduces carbohydrate intake and uses fat as the main energy source. In fact, researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia analyzed related clinical trials and found that people on a keto diet tended to experience somewhat reduced hunger and cravings for food. The researchers said, “It is possible that the state of ketosis affected appetite suppression.”

Exercise is also essential. Swimming is a good option. When swimming, the body continues to move to overcome the resistance of the water, which burns a significant amount of calories. Therefore, swimming consistently can improve cardiorespiratory endurance and effectively reduce body fat, including abdominal fat. In particular, freestyle is beneficial for training the lower-body muscles, while breaststroke is effective for strengthening the adductor muscles on the inner thighs. Backstroke helps train the core muscles, and butterfly helps strengthen the chest and shoulder muscles.
