김재현 교수는 난치성 당뇨병 전문가로 명성이 높으며, 특히 1형 당뇨병에 대한 인식 개선과 제도 발전에 다방면으로 활동해 왔다. 김재현 교수는 대한당뇨병학회 췌도부전 당뇨병 TF팀장을 맡아 1형 당뇨 환자들을 위해 적극적으로 목소리를 내왔다. 또한, 연속혈당측정기(CGM)를 이용한 효율적인 혈당 관리 근거를 마련하는 연구를 수행하였다. 최근에는 1형, 2형으로 구분된 현행 당뇨병 분류체계를 넘어, 과학적 근거에 기반한 췌도부전 단계별 새로운 분류체계를 정립하는 데 힘을 보태며 당뇨병 진료의 패러다임 변화를 선도하고 있다.
